From Homeless to CEO: The Inspirational Story of Chris Gardner

Chris Gardner was born in 1954 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was raised by his mother, Bettye Jean Triplett, who was imprisoned for embezzlement when Chris was 2 years old. As a result, Chris and his older sister were sent to live with their abusive stepfather. Despite the challenges he faced growing up, Chris always had a strong work ethic and a desire to succeed.

After high school, Chris joined the Navy and traveled the world. When he was discharged, he moved to San Francisco and started selling medical equipment. However, he struggled to make ends meet and was eventually evicted from his apartment. Chris and his infant son, Christopher, were homeless and forced to sleep in public restrooms, subway stations, and homeless shelters.

Fighting for a Better Life

Determined to provide a better life for his son, Chris applied for an unpaid internship at a stock brokerage firm. He was one of 20 interns selected out of 2,000 applicants. Despite not receiving a salary and having to work multiple jobs to support his family, Chris was dedicated to learning the ins and outs of the stock market.

During his time at the brokerage firm, Chris faced many setbacks and challenges. He encountered racism and discrimination from some of his colleagues and clients. However, he refused to give up and continued to work hard and learn as much as he could.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Despite the obstacles he faced, Chris's hard work and determination paid off. He eventually landed a job as a full-time stockbroker and went on to start his own brokerage firm, Gardner Rich & Co. Today, he is a successful businessman, motivational speaker, and author.

Chris's story was the inspiration for the 2006 movie, The Pursuit of Happiness, starring Will Smith. The movie portrays Chris's struggles and triumphs as he navigates the challenges of homelessness, poverty, and the corporate world.
